GIZ Tanzania

From January 26th to 29th, 2026, illuminAid conducted a four-day Video Education Workshop (VEW) in Dodoma, Tanzania, in partnership with GIZ Tanzania under the SAFE (Strengthening Access to Formal Justice and GBV Prevention) Project. The workshop aimed to equip community-based paralegals with the skills, tools, and ethical frameworks needed to use participatory video as a social and behavior change communication (SBCC) tool for gender-based violence prevention, women’s safety, and access to justice.

Participants included paralegals from six partner organizations, along with representatives from GIZ staff. This training enables paralegals to conduct repeated community screenings and facilitated discussions within their areas of operation.

Throughout the workshop, participants received hands-on training in video storytelling for SBCC, scriptwriting, storyboarding, camera operation, sound and lighting, and basic editing workflows. Particular emphasis was placed on ethical storytelling, informed consent, and safeguarding practices essential for GBV-sensitive programming. One full day was dedicated to field-based video production, allowing participants to test filming and community engagement approaches in real-world conditions.

To support sustained implementation beyond the training, illuminAid provided each participating organization with tablet-based camera kits, solar-powered projector kits, and recharge systems. These tools enable paralegals to produce and screen videos in communities with limited access to electricity, supporting repeated outreach sessions reaching groups of approximately 50 participants at a time.

By the conclusion of the workshop, participants had completed two participant-led videos and developed preliminary action plans outlining how video education would be integrated into ongoing GIZ-supported activities. The training marked the launch of illuminAid’s Capacity Development Program (CDP), which will provide continued technical support, mentoring, and follow-up through mid-2026 to reinforce skills and ensure effective community-level application.

This collaboration between illuminAid and GIZ Tanzania highlights the role of community-led video education in strengthening legal awareness, preventing gender-based violence, and fostering informed dialogue at the local level. We are proud to support paralegal organizations with practical tools and training that enable sustainable, ethical, and scalable impact across Tanzania.
