This workshop aimed to equip 17 participants—including community members, youth and women leaders, and partner staff—with hands-on video production skills, empowering them to craft effective development messaging for their communities. The workshop built on the core objectives of the FRSD-CT project, using behavior change communication and grassroots storytelling to support resilience-building and local socio-economic development.
Over five days, participants engaged in both theoretical instruction and practical, hands-on exercises covering the entire video production process: conceptualizing ideas, scripting, filming, and editing short-form educational videos. illuminAid equipped participants with camera kits, cordless projector systems, and solar-powered recharge kits to enable ongoing grassroots video production and projection in remote areas beyond the workshop.
Participants were organized into small working groups, each guided by a trained Local Video Trainer. The training emphasized not only technical skills, but also ethical storytelling practices, culturally relevant messaging, and audience-centered communication strategies. Special emphasis was placed on using video as a tool for social behavior change communication (SBCC), particularly in addressing pressing local issues. By the conclusion of the workshop, all three participant teams had produced short, engaging educational videos on topics vital to their communities:
Agricultural Economics: Highlighting local economic opportunities and sustainable farming practices.
Climate Change Awareness: Addressing environmental challenges and advocating for community-driven solutions.
Discouraging Illegal Activity: Encouraging youth to reject involvement with extremist groups and pursue constructive community roles.
illuminAid is proud to have played a role in building local capacity for effective communication and behavior change. We are confident that these newly trained filmmakers will continue producing powerful, locally relevant video content to inform, inspire, and support positive change in Northern Togo.
