Donate Stock
A gift of publicly traded stock can help illuminAid equip communities with the training and technology needed to create and share locally relevant educational videos.
Why Donate Stock?
Donating appreciated securities directly to illuminAid may offer tax advantages. Depending on the donor’s circumstances, securities held for more than one year may qualify for a charitable deduction based on their fair market value. Donors may also avoid recognizing the capital gain that could result from selling the securities before donating the proceeds.
Different rules may apply to securities held for one year or less, depreciated securities, contribution limits, and other individual circumstances. Donors should consult a qualified tax, legal, or financial advisor regarding a proposed gift.
How to Donate Stock
1. Notify illuminAid
Before initiating the transfer, donors should contact illuminAid at info@illuminaid.org and provide:
The donor’s name and phone number
The name or ticker symbol of the security
The number of shares being transferred
The name of the bank or broker transferring the shares
The approximate transfer date
Brokerage transfers do not always identify the donor. Providing this information allows illuminAid to identify and properly acknowledge the gift. Donors should not send brokerage account numbers or other sensitive financial information by email.
2. Instruct the Bank or Broker
Donors should ask their bank or broker to transfer the shares using the following information:
Firm: Fidelity Investments
DTC number: 0226
Account name: ILLUMINAID
illuminAid tax ID number: 26-1616943
illuminAid account number: Contact illuminAid to receive the complete account number before initiating the transfer.
Gift Acknowledgment
After the securities are received and the donor has been identified, illuminAid will provide a written acknowledgment identifying the security, number of shares, and date received. The acknowledgment will not assign a monetary value to the gift.
Note for Year-End Giving
Stock transfers can take several business days to complete. Donors seeking to make a gift within a particular tax year should begin the process early and confirm the applicable requirements and completion date with their broker and professional advisors.
