Transforming Healthcare Through the Power of Video

Access to healthcare is a basic human right. But for millions of people around the world, especially in remote or underserved communities, it's still out of reach. At illuminAid, we’re working to change that—by equipping health workers with tools that bring life-saving education directly to the people who need it most.

In 2021, illuminAid partnered with Plan International Paraguay to create locally developed videos aimed at slowing the spread of COVID-19. These videos were more than just information—they were a lifeline. Created with the community and delivered by trusted local health workers, the videos helped families understand prevention, symptoms, and care during a time of fear and confusion.

But this is just one example of how video is revolutionizing healthcare.

Around the world, mobile technology is emerging as a game-changer for frontline health workers. From India to Ethiopia, governments and organizations are deploying mobile devices to support nurses, midwives, and community health workers. These tools allow them to collect patient data, send reminders, access medical protocols, and most importantly—educate patients at the point of care.

illuminAid’s work directly supports this movement, using community-driven video content to empower healthcare providers. A groundbreaking study, "Mobile Video for Patient Education: The Midwives’ Perspective," demonstrated the real-world impact of this approach. In the study, nurse midwives used mobile videos to teach mothers about maternal nutrition, breastfeeding, and newborn care during postnatal visits.

The results were clear:

  • Health workers regularly and willingly integrated videos into their workflow

  • Videos were shown in clinics and homes, increasing access and consistency

  • Cultural relevance, such as local language, familiar faces, and trusted voices, built credibility and trust among mothers

These findings validate what we see in the field every day: when you equip healthcare workers with culturally relevant tools, they become even more effective agents of change.

But this work doesn’t happen without your help.

With your support, we can:

  • Create more community-led videos on critical health topics like maternal care, nutrition, and disease prevention

  • Equip more frontline health workers with mobile devices and content to reach remote families

  • Train health workers to use these tools effectively and sustainably

  • Expand our impact to more countries and communities in urgent need

Donors make this possible. Every contribution helps us bridge the gap between knowledge and care, ensuring that even the most marginalized communities have access to health information they can trust.

Health is not a luxury. It’s a right. Together, we can make it a reality.
